And justice for all

We are watching the Epstein cover up continue to dribble on in slow motion, and we can only hope we are a long ways from the conclusion of this case, because if we aren't, there is going to be yet another cover up, and that is just not acceptable, or it shouldn't be to anyone calling themselves a morally upright person.  I just read a meme that really hit for me.  It said something along the lines of how pathetic it is that a 15 minute halftime show at a football game has garnered more national attention than the Epstein case.  While not exactly true, I think every single woman who has ever been the victim of a sexual assault feels that to her very soul.

It is clear that there are a lot of questions that need to be asked, and a lot of people who have explanations to give, some totally innocent, some not so innocent, some guilty of things as yet undetermined.  But my bottom line is very simple, and has been since Virginia Roberts Guiffre first came on the scene years ago and blasted her story into the national conscience, or lack thereof.

For too long, young girls were clearly abused by powerful men without consequence.  Those girls, now women, are still being dismissed with very little consequence to their abusers, with the exception of Ghislaine Maxwell.  (Ironic how the only one to suffer any consequences at all here turns out to be a woman, vile and deserving as she is.)  Even now, these former abused children are being called "underage women," of all things, so as to minimize the reputational damage to the abusers, rather than make the facts clear and call them what they are.  Pedophiles.

So here is a reality check for those who have forgotten to put on their thinking caps.  No matter how they are dressed or how much makeup they have on or how grown up they may think they are, fourteen is not a woman.  Fourteen is a girl, and they still have young girl brains, and young girl dreams, and young girl thought processes.  They are impulsive and immature and overall, they do not make solid decisions.  Because, you know, they are children.  Full. Stop.

I could not care less whether the powerful people involved are red or blue, black or white, male or female, billionaires or millionaires, royal or commoner, from the US or somewhere else, or any other detail.  Every single one of them must be called to account, explain themselves, and if they are found to have engaged in wrongdoing, they must suffer the consequences, without exception.  I could not care less who they are, if they were involved, they must be held accountable.

These people are not the victims, whatever they would like you to believe.  These now adult women are the victims, and they are now the extremely courageous truth seekers who are pursuing their own long overdue justice.  They were children, they were abused, and they deserve justice for their stolen childhoods.  And here is my comparison for you, just to drive that truth home.

Elizabeth Smart, that child who was the subject of international interest when she was abducted from her bedroom some years back, raped and held captive by a whacko, and eventually recovered and now speaks to the horrors of child sexual abuse, was a 14 year old CHILD when this occured.  No one argued that she was anything but a child.  No one said she was an underaged woman.  NO.  Everyone called her exactly what she was, which was a child.  A girl.  Because she was.  An adolescent with an undeveloped brain, who was still trying to figure out who she was and what she wanted and how to navigate the world.

Many of the girls (and now it seems potentially some boys, as well,) who have accused Jeffrey Epstein for years were as young as age 14.  Children.  Adolescents with undeveloped brains, who were still trying to figure out who they were and what they wanted and how to navigate the world.  They are not underage women who were:

  • capable of consent
  • who were making solid decisions for themselves
  • who knew what they were doing
  • who saw an opportunity to make money and took it
  • or any other ridiculous non-explanation you care to come up with.
They were children who were failed by every single adult in their orbit, including their parents, the other adults they came into contact with, and society generally.  We are all part of the problem.  We have supported the very people who have hidden this injustice from the light, overlooked the obvious, looked away when we should have looked them in the eye, made excuses instead of listened.  It is not a he said/she said situation, as I have heard it referred to.  It is at least 200 shes (likely many more) said, and they cannot all, with photos and videos and all kinds of evidence, and a few dead people, starting with Jeffrey Epstein himself in the path, be lying.  Let's get real here.

The time is long overdue to meet their moment, face up to the horror of what they lived, and take on what happened to them.  Of course those who are not guilty of anything should have the opportunity to clear their names.  Innocent people are always caught up in the web of other people's wrong doing.  Answering questions gives them that opportunity, and if it were me, I would be very eager to do so.  But if someone is hiding, reluctant to answer questions, refusing to give a deposition as to why they were involved with Epstein in any way, there must be a reason why.  I think its fair to ask what the reason is, and to be very suspicious of the answer, no matter who they are, or how important or wealthy or prominent they or their name may be.  No matter how hard we have believed in them.  Because with new information, it is always okay to change your mind about someone.

Lets stop making the Epstein files a political football or a popularity contest and start taking it seriously as a criminal matter.  This case is not about a single politician or royal prince or billionaire.  These young women deserve their day in court, and they deserve justice, just as Elizabeth Smart did.  They deserve to see those who diminished them be diminished in the eyes of the world permanently.

I will always stand for what is right.  And justice, true justice, is always right.  Seek the truth, let the chips fall where they may.  And justice for all should, at the very least, be the goal for these women.
